A lot of schools are going to have student interest groups. These are going to be really good places to start getting ideas of medicine and dentistry. Through these student interest groups you can get access to volunteer opportunities, and research that are harder to come by for other students so I would look into these. For medicine it will be important to be part of clubs and organizations and it will also be important to work into leadership to show that you are active in the things that you like. You are also going to want to work in some volunteering which your advisor can find a lot of different places that are good for volunteering. For medicine it can also be important to get some shadowing time in. I would reach out to the different physicians in your area and ask them if you can follow them around and learn a little bit about what they do throughout the day.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, it's good advice, I'll keep it in mind.

Maryuri, the leading dental association seems to be the American Dental Association who may have opportunities for networking and for expanding your career.
Regarding cardiac surgery, there are two main professional organizations which lead the specialty: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). CT surgery interest groups to either join or create can boost not only your exposure to cardiac surgery but also demonstrate dedication to the field if you eventually choose to apply. Another essential organization to get involved with as early as you have an interest is the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA) which is an organization run by cardiothoracic residents and fellows designed to build and promote the specialty. Involvement in the TSRA may provide invaluable networking opportunities not only with CT surgery faculty, but with trainees as well. The TSRA is a component of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TSDA), which consists of a leadership board and all the cardiothoracic surgery program directors.
There are also four main medical conferences which are sponsored by the STS and the AATS. The STS annual meeting is traditionally held in January, while the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association meeting is held in November at a venue in the southern United States. The AATS annual meeting is typically held at the beginning of May, while the Western Thoracic Surgical Association meeting is under the umbrella of the AATS and typically occurs in June, at a venue in the western United States.
Hope this helps!

Hi Maryuri:
While attending a Dental or a Medical College, it is best to network among your classmates, professors and career campus center personnel and get involved with student organizations which are in line for your future profession. It's never too early to become a part of a professional organization outside of the college environment. It will show your proactiveness and initiative to learn more about either becoming a Dentist or a Cardiac Surgeon. Plus, you will have access to those professionals who are practicing in the field of work that you are interested in, ask them questions, etc.
