Preparing for an audition for a spot in an orchestra can be a challenging and nerve-wracking experience, but with the right preparation, you can increase your chances of success. Here are some tips to help you get prepared:

1. Practice regularly: Practice is the key to success in any audition, so make sure you are practicing regularly leading up to the audition. Focus on the pieces you will be performing and work on any challenging sections until they are perfect.

2. Get feedback from a teacher or mentor: It can be helpful to get feedback from a teacher or mentor who is experienced in auditioning for orchestras. They can provide you with guidance on technique, tone, and interpretation.

3. Record yourself: Recording yourself playing the pieces you will be performing can be a helpful tool for self-evaluation. Listen to the recording and identify areas where you need to improve.

4. Research the orchestra: Research the orchestra you are auditioning for and familiarize yourself with their repertoire and playing style. This can help you tailor your performance to their preferences.

5. Prepare mentally: Auditions can be stressful, so it's important to prepare yourself mentally by visualizing a successful audition, practicing relaxation techniques, and maintaining a positive attitude.

6. Dress appropriately: Dress professionally and appropriately for the audition. This can help you feel more confident and make a good impression on the judges.

7. Be punctual: Arrive early for the audition to allow yourself time to warm up and mentally prepare. Being punctual also shows the judges that you are responsible and organized.

Remember to stay focused, confident, and positive during the audition. With the right preparation and mindset, you can perform at your best and increase your chances of success. Good luck!

It's best to practice daily, at least an hour a day in a quiet area by yourself. Minimize distraction, but take a 5 minute break whenever you need it.
Scales are helpful in warming you up, so practice a few of those before you begin playing your piece. If there are areas of your audition piece that you struggle with, focus on those parts and rehearse them until you feel comfortable with them. It's like when an actor rehearses their hardest lines until it's like second nature to them.
Getting feedback is important, whether it's from others or yourself. Once in a while you can have someone else listen to you play, preferably someone who's knowledgeable in your instrument, and they can tell you what was good and what needs improvement. Or if you don't have anyone around, record yourself on your phone. You can then play it back and decide for yourself what needs to be changed.

Emily’s Answer

Hi Mai, congratulations on getting an audition! I was a violist and auditioned for several orchestras during my time in school. I always practiced a lot and knew my audition music well, but got extremely nervous when it came time to actually audition. One thing that helped me overcome that fear was to play through my audition in front of friends and family members as a mock audition. I treated each one seriously and let myself get comfortable playing while nervous.

Be sure to prepare your music, prepare your mind, be well-rested the night before, and most importantly believe in yourself. Good luck!
