Is it recommended to go in as undecided into college?

I know you have to do general ed the first 2 years but is it an advantage if you name your major before going in? #college #college-bound #undecided

Hi Eunice,

Good question! Going into college as an undecided major is completely fine! Your first year of college is a great time to explore as many different fields/majors as possible. In fact, some colleges and universities do not allow students to declare their major until their sophomore year of college.

Now, if you plan on majoring in a field that takes a little longer to complete (such as pre-med), declaring early could be helpful. Otherwise, I would suggest taking at least the first semester to explore different courses.

One way to think about it is that you are going into college to "explore" as opposed to going in "undecided". Its difficult to know right away what you want to commit to so spending time exploring, learning and gathering information is worthwhile. Once you decide on a major you will focus classes on that major and sometimes it is difficult to change so taking some time to just explore make sense. It may feel like there is pressure from peers and others to choose a major so its important not to give into that right away. If there is something you are passionate about and want to learn more about, that is an important part of the college experience and doesn't always need to connect directly to your career choice. For example, you may decide to major in Literature and not necessarily dictate your final career choice/path. Having hired many people in my career I have seen many people go on to have successful careers in areas that may or may not have aligned to their education so stay open minded, don't feel pressured to commit too early and/or worry too much about your final destination.

Hi Eunice,

I am not aware of any advantage that you would have going into college with a major decided. The first two years are designed to give you access to a wide variety of subjects that engage you in different ways. It is during that time that you will find something that interests. It is important that you think about what you already like and do in your own life. You are still going to be making judgments on electives that may impact your decision on a major. For example, you may have an Arts elective requirement. Your preference for acting over drawing or music is a decision that can impact your future. When I chose a class, I chose History of Theater, since history overall is a passion of mine and acting certainly is not a passion.
