Jynessa’s Answer

Try to find your innermost voice. If you are authentic, your passion will always be noticed. Also speak to what you plan to contribute to the school (by academic excellence, involvement in certain clubs or programs, or community outreach) and how the program/field of study they offer will help prepare you to accomplish your goals.

Byron’s Answer

Focus less on the opening or introductory paragraph, and focus more on the "meat" of the essay. Make any references, citations, quotes, etc., flow smoothly, and remember the middle part of the essay is the place most readers will reflect back on when remembering its meaning or beauty.

Chirayu’s Answer

Starting your college essay can be intimidating, but here are some tips to help you get started - Start by brainstorming ideas for your essay. Think about your experiences, interests, and goals. Consider what sets you apart from others and what you can offer to the college community. Once you have brainstormed some ideas, choose a topic that is meaningful to you and that will allow you to showcase your unique qualities and strengths. Remember, the goal of the essay is to provide insight into who you are as a person, not just your academic achievements. Your thesis statement should be a clear and concise statement that summarizes the main point of your essay. It should be specific and focused on the topic you have chosen. An outline will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that your essay flows smoothly. It should include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Once you have your outline, start writing your essay. Don't worry too much about getting it perfect the first time. Just focus on getting your ideas down on paper.

Tips for writing a college essay that stands out - Don't try to be someone you're not in your essay. Be honest and authentic, and let your personality shine through. Rather than making broad statements, use specific examples to illustrate your points. This will make your essay more engaging and memorable. Rather than simply telling the reader about your experiences and accomplishments, show them through vivid descriptions and anecdotes. Admissions officers read thousands of essays, so it's important to be concise and to the point. Avoid unnecessary details and focus on the most important aspects of your story. Once you have written your essay, be sure to edit and proofread it carefully. Check for grammar and spelling errors, and make sure that your essay flows smoothly and makes sense.

Hello Luna!

I agree with Jynessa's point.
To write a successful essay, aim to show the best version of yourself: your authentic self!

When I wrote my essay, I struggled with the prompts. Initially, I felt I needed to write an "academic essay" like I did throughout high school. Never talking about anything, just formal, clear cut, and dry.

However, college essays are different. They're meant to be personal. Essays follow a narrative where you share a story about yourself, and tie it back into the prompt.

Your essay can center a lesson you learned from a extracurriculars, how you've grown over a year ago, or something you find interesting. The key here is to share your uniqueness.

A good place to learn more about narrative personal essay writing is College Vine! The website provides a lot of examples of how to approach writing. Here's a link: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/essays/

Overall, take the time to share your unique voice.
Sending you luck as you start writing your personal essay :)
