What type of college is best?

A number of colleges across the U.S. offer the major I want, however, there are schools that specialize in teaching this subject, as well as schools that provide excellent internship opportunities. Would I be better off going to a specialized college, a college with internship opportunities, or a college that simply offers the major? Would this choice really make a difference in my future? #undecided #career-opportunity-and-preparation

This is a challenging question to answer. It depends on your definition of "best". In many ways, it is about what is "best" for you. First, I may ask - Would you be better set up for your desired job by going to a specific university? If not, then I wouldn't focus on a specific school over other benefits that another school may offer. What other things do you want from college? Maybe you want to avoid going into debt. Maybe you want to live on campus in a place that you want to live away from home to get that experience. Maybe you want a college with a lot of different major options since you don't know what you want to do. So start with your definition of "best" and let that guide you.

Hello Analisa:

This is a very unique question. I agree with the previous posters but, my opinion is that college and/or university is what you make of it. I'd like to add a different perspective based on recent experience in my family of graduates. Our young adults were in the top percentage (gifted) of their high school class. They selected colleges and universities that they felt they could thrive, excel in academia, campus life, etc. . Some of the colleges/universities were in the southern part of the US, while others were up north. Our kids thrived and excelled greatly at their chosen major and are now doing extremely well in their career.

I suggest that you research what the college/university is offering that you are looking for. If you know in advance what you want to major in - go for that school that is offering that major and ask questions.

I wish you much success as you decide on college. You've received good advice from posters and I'm sure you'll make the best decision.

Best of luck!

~ Sheila

Hi Analisa!

This is a great question and one I am sure many college bound students wonder about.

If you are certain you want to study that major and eventually go into that field, I would suggest a specialized college with internship opportunities in your major/field. The hands on experience that internships offer is truly invaluable and enhances your learning in the classroom.

Now, if you are interested in that major but you also have other interests, I would suggest looking into colleges that offer a variety of majors/fields. Personally, I attended a liberal arts college and I appreciated the opportunity to explore different fields. I entered college wanting to double major in English and History and changed my mind after my first semester.

College is the perfect opportunity to explore different majors and fields, if that's what you want to do!
