Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you would like to own a hair salon.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Finish your high school first
2. Explore the courses offering by the hair academies and attend the relevant courses
3. Explore any intern opportunities to work in the hair salon
4. After graduation from hair academy, work in some famous hair salon. Look for experienced & prestige’s hair designers be your mentor
5. Understand the operating model and establish people relationships in the industry
6. Attend seminars and make sure keep yourself up to date on the trend and techniques

You can then start your own salon in small scale first.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Katherine’s Answer

Hi Annisa,
I’m Katie, a licensed cosmetologist in Florida.

I’m currently in the process of starting up my business. I’m in college for electrical engineering and photonics, but I learned about electricity and photonics through my experience as an esthetician technician. Based on my experience, here’s my advice:

1) Don’t be afraid to start at any age! I’m 22 years old and I have a lot of experience to where I can actually do this on my own!
2) Take your time. Esthetics is a side job for me and I actually prefer that. My experience has showed me how I can stand out by blending my interests of lasers and beauty into skin treatments. And yes, you can use lasers and light therapy on hair! I truly recommend taking your time because it’ll show you what your interests are and how you’ll be and to stand out.
3) Take business and chemistry classes. Business to help market yourself, write a business proposal, and make a financial plan. Chemistry to help you better understand pH and how it’s related to the hair, skin, and nails during treatments.
4) Research your state’s laws about square footage in your salon, booth requirements, and bathroom regulations.
5) Your business can be anywhere! You can get a work from home business license to provide services in your home or you can be a mobile salon and travel in your state to provide services. Again, check your state laws to see what’s required.

I hope this helps!
