Doc’s Answer

Kenny consider applying for internships even during your freshman year. As you noted most college students pursue internships during their junior or senior year of school. However, it's never too early to begin applying and participating in internship programs, especially programs that are directly related to your major and career path. Plus, obtaining internship experience early on can boost your chances of obtaining more elite internships during your junior and senior college years.

Doc recommends the following next steps:

Be familiar with the deadlines for certain internships. Larger companies that offer several internships tend to have a structured process in which they recruit and hire interns and often complete the entire process in the earlier months of the year.
Your resume plays a vital role in whether you are considered for an internship. Take the time to ensure it is up-to-date and as professional as possible before you begin the internship application process. Be sure to include any relevant experience and coursework that will help set you apart from other candidates.
Network whenever possible. There are typically networking events held on campus during the first semester of the school year. Make the most of these events and meet as many people as possible. Stay in contact with the connections who are in your career field and make sure they know you are interested in intern positions.
Lastly, It's important to review your social media and delete or hide anything that doesn't portray you in a professional and responsible light when applying for internships. Many hiring managers turn to social media to get a better understanding of their candidates, and having inappropriate images or information on your social media can put you at risk of not being considered for an internship.

Usually within a given academic year certain types of internships as well as full-time roles are recruited. At wellsfargo we have already begun the application process for some our investment banking internships for those that are currently rising juniors for Summer 2024. In the fall usually accounting and Finance are first with consulting roles. In January February most other organizations with formal internship programs (nonprofits, tech, etc.). This is very generalized and will vary from company to company. The best advice is to begin this summer learning the type of internships you want and find out who (what companies) offers them. When you return In the fall schedule an appointment with the career center. They can help make sure you don't miss any deadlines and make sure your resume is current.

Daniel’s Answer

Hi Kenny,

I would start this summer before your senior year starts. Many companies hire summer interns especially right now with the labor shortage. I will warn you that some summer internships may be unpaid or pay close to minimum wage. However, the insight/knowledge that you can gain is hard to put a price on and its only for the summer. I would check with your school or your local chamber of commerce to see if they know any good companies accepting interns this summer.

Hope this helps and good luck on the journey!
