Let's tackle the cons: there are safety concerns when driving the rails and you literally hold people's lives in your hands the way that a pilot does. You also have both federal and state regulations that you will need to follow.
The pros are that this is a life time career that will allow you to raise a family, lead a generous life and retire well. And if you're a train person or is very thrilling to drive one. There is also a lot of room for advancement. I have a friend that started as a driver in LA and now works for the federal transportation commission reporting on accidents all over the country.
