This is such a great question. Many of us overlook the importance of setting aside time for rest. One way I did this through college was sticking to a schedule. I set aside one full day where I did not work or do homework. This took prior planning and making sure I didn't procrastinate. I also chose to work at the school I attended so my schedule was flexible enough to complete my assignments during the week. Of course, there were weeks where I felt I was not successful in giving myself the rest I needed, but for the most part, it was a solid plan.

Balancing the things you desire to do in your personal life while you are in school can be tricky, especially if you also work. While it is important to find time for rest, play, and work/responsibility, you'll have to remember that there is a level of sacrifice that comes with attending school. Here are some questions and actions you'll want to ponder on to decide what's best for you:

1. How much free time do you currently have for rest/personal life activities?
2. What can you do less of that would increase this time for you (i.e. social media, TV, video games, etc.)
3. Are you willing to replace the things mentioned above (question 2) with "rest and relaxation?"
4. Create a weekly calendar and schedule time for rest and personal activities.

I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck in your endeavors!

Great question! This is something that many of us struggle with, no matter how experienced you are in your career/ field. I think one of the most important things you can do is figure out what your 'non negotiables' are. In other words, the items that are most important to you. Maybe it is weekly brunch with your friends or maybe it is attending your daughters weekly dance class. No matter what it is, I would recommend that you build your schedule/ day/ week around that.

For instance maybe it is attending your daughter's weekly dance class and that is at 3 on Tuesdays and goes until 5. You could talk to your supervisor about how you would like to come in an hour earlier on Monday and Tuesday to make sure you can be there for your daughter. If you are open and transparent about things, no matter what it is, I've found that people are normally more willing to be accommodating.

To any supervisors out there, I would encourage you to treat all requests like this the same. I have heard and seen some supervisors are very accommodating to people with kids but if kids aren't your direct report/ employees main priority, I am a firm believer that you should accommodate their reasonable request just like you would someone with a child.

In the example above with dance class at 3 that request should be treated similarly to a request from someone who wants to cut out every Thursday at 3 to go to a golf league with school friends. Treating everyone the same and accommodating where you can will provide for more transparency and a workforce that is more willing to go the extra mile.
