What out of state colleges are the best for me after high school?

What out of state colleges are perfect for me to choose because I want to go to a good college that has my major that I want to succeed in that specific field so that I don’t have to change majors because my goal is to do two majors and right now I’m still researching on what college is right for me and should I register for that one but I at least I have two years before it happens because I’m only in 9th grade and I don’t want to mistakes on picking that college I want to go to

Zennia’s Answer

My take is that you should take time to figure out where you want to live (what city you want to live in), and then find schools around that city. Don't borrow anxiety about picking majors and picking a career. You're in 9th grade, you have at least 2-3 more years to figure out what you want to be when you enter the workforce.

Gabriel’s Answer

Full disclosure – I work at a university in the financial aid department, So please take whatever I offer with a grain of salt.

1. The first red flag for me is that you’re specifically asking about colleges out of state but didn’t specify a program you’re looking at.

2. I have been to Ypsilanti…I have spent a couple of winter breaks in Eagle Harbor in my past…and despite being WAY out of the way…I may have made a side-trip to the Hilltop in L’anse for a cinnamon roll or three…and Houghton rocks...

So, if I can be completely honest, as a financial aid person…there are many fewer schools that charge in-state vs. out-of state tuition these days. But U of M? Spartans? Even K-Zoo, that I got to visit once? You live in a state with some pretty reputable and darn good schools. So the real question is what major do you want? And to piggy-back on Zennia’s brilliant answer….my personal spin…

What you choose to major in does not have to define you. You are not forced to have that as your career. What matters in college is that you don’t quit. As a former quitter…biggest mistake of my life…and took me ten years to fix. I hope you have a good relationship with your folks and can talk about these things. If you’re into the arts and want to go to film school…sure…UCLA might be a better option than U of M in the long run. It depends on how-specific your desired-major is. And again…that is not the end-all, be-all.

I have a daughter that I am trying to ensure does not replicate any mistakes I did.

And the fact that you’re asking in grade 9? Good on you, for asking so early…but don’t push yourself too hard. Another mistake I may have made. Based SOLELY on an ACT score, when I went to my state school…they pretty much let me do whatever I wanted. I was not ready to double-major, triple-minor…but I did anyway. Don’t push yourself too hard is all I’m saying.

You got this!
