When did you attend college?

I don't want to go to college immediately after high school. Is it a good idea to wait before I go to college?

Hello Ina!

If you feel strongly against it, then no. You don't need to go to college.

There are other paths you can take besides a 4-year-degree. Associate programs, Trade programs/Apprenticeships, or going directly into the workforce part-time or full-time.

You can also defer your enrollment for a year after accepting an enrollment offer, or simply attend college at a later age.

Yes, college can lead to some good career opportunities. However, if you don't have a career that requires a degree in mind, and "hate" the idea of going..... You can just not go.

As long as you have real, personal goals in mind for your life right now (or goals/plans for the next two years...because it's impossible to plan your 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 future), then it's possible for you to find success.

Whether you choose college or not, you'll still need to work hard --- To build a life for yourself.

Personally: it is better to work hard with a plan in mind than to enter any route (school, trades, military) blindly.

For now, figure out which routes besides college will work for you. Then, think of steps to achieve your goals.
Feel free to ask for help either from others on CareerVillage or from your family with your plans as well.

Sending you support as you consider next steps after graduation :)

It's fantastic that you're considering your options before diving into college! If 1) you have the means to take a gap year without compromising your or your family's financial stability and 2) you're not quite certain about where you want to direct your college education, a gap year can be an incredible opportunity to explore.

You might consider spending your year working full-time, traveling regionally or internationally, or a combination of both. Embrace the chance to embark on a path of self-discovery and personal growth. Remember, forging your own path and embracing your independence doesn't always mean adhering to traditional expectations.

At this stage in your life, you have the unique advantage of time on your side. Take this opportunity to learn more about yourself, your passions, and where you want to make an impact in the world. Remember that even if you make mistakes along the way, you have the resilience to bounce back and grow from those experiences. So go ahead and explore - the world is your oyster and you have so much to look forward to!
