From one of our Conversion Optimization Team for Gaming: Sr Program PMs
First determine what you would want to do at a video game company – do you want to develop/program games? Do you want to manage merchandising or sales? Do you want to want to be a producer or sound designer? Once you know what field within the industry you want to go into, start developing the relevant skills for that area and pursue a degree in that field. While you are learning those skills, develop a portfolio of your work and host it on a free website/Instagram/Linkedin. Once you are feeling confident in your skills, start looking for opportunities to gain work experience through internships or at smaller companies. While you do all of this, begin building your network – a connection you make today could lead to a job offer five years from now.
From one of our Tech PMs:
It is always good to do your research on a company you are interested in working for but having a background in technology is probably the best starting point. And a creative mindset.

This is a hard question to answer since I have no idea what exactly you want to do as far as working in a video game company.
I would suggest you figure out (if you haven't) what you want to do and then ask that question... like, "I want to get hired as an (animator, game designer, environment artist, programmer...) ..."
Etc :)

A huge step in the door is applying for internship opportunities.
If you have a specific company in mind, start networking now. Find a mentor in the field, even better if they have connections to that company. Stay aware of opportunities and make efforts to learn or take on independent projects related to the video game field. Learn about specific sub-fields such as UI, testing, research, accessibility, development, and/or asset creation.
Also keep in mind that in your career path your dream company may not be the first opportunity that comes along. Be open to a wide variety of opportunities.

What kind of work on a game are you hoping to do? There are a lot of different roles on a game development team. Some of the most common are artist, designer, programmer, or producer. If you have a general idea what you want to do, find some of the companies you are interested in and look at their job listings for entry level or internship positions. This should give you an idea of what they are looking for in candidates, and how you can prepare to meet those requirements. Most game companies will want to see you complete some kind of secondary or college level education related to the position you are interested in. It can also be helpful to build a good portfolio to help you stand out from the competition!
