Megan’s Answer

Hi Tran! Although I am not a PA, my friend is and I saw that no one has answered your question yet so I wanted to try to answer from what I have learned from my friend.

The hardest part for my friend is his schedule at the hospital. He works 12-hour shifts for a week on and a week off. When he started he worked nights from 7 pm till 7 am. It pays more and is less busy but once he had kids he had to switch to mornings. Mornings are still hard when he works 7 am till 7 pm and by the time he gets home, his kids are going to bed. He has the week on and week off though so he gets that week off with his kids. 12 hour shifts can be hard. Not every place has schedules like this. I personally would never survive the night shift. Just something to think about is what kind of schedule you would want.

For classes in high school take as many advanced science classes as you can. Also, see if you can take any health care classes at your school's career center if they have one. Try to volunteer, get a part-time job, or job shadow places in health care.

Something smart my friend did was to get his bachelor's degree completely paid for with scholarships. In graduate school, you can not get as many scholarships and it costs more. By only having to take out loans for his masters degree he was able to pay off his student loans in a few years.

I hope that helps!
