Are there any career options where I can be a writer or designer and also work in the field of crime and mystery?

I am a freshman in college currently undecided on my career path. I have a wide number of interests so I’m in the process of exploring. My main interests are in interior design and writing. However, I do also loveee mysteries/crime solving. For right now, I just want want to learn how or if it’s possible to combine two of my interests(writing and mystery/crime or design and mystery/crime) together as a career. For instance, I’ve heard about investigative journalism but I am oblivious to anything else writing or design related in the field of criminal work.

Baljit’s Answer

Hi Cece,
Have you considered a courtroom artist? There you would be able to capture the sense of atmosphere by the drawings of the proceedings. The way to get noticed as a courtroom artist would be to look into news channels that need to show the drawings to the public depending on their interests.

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi CeCe: If you write you could become a courtroom reporter. They serve a very valuable role in the justice system. The reporters are often the ones who uncover something in a case and bring justice to the forefront!

Do not feel discouraged about being undecided. I had 5 majors going through college. Got a Master's Degree in Teaching and then went to law school. Just keep moving forward - it will all work out! Things are funny that way!

Kerry’s Answer

If you’re a strong writer, consider a communications role. You could explore working for an NGO focused on criminal justice, or perhaps a cybersecurity or software company with products to combat criminal activity. There are probably amazing stories and case studies that come from this. Just a couple thoughts!

Hi Ceece.
It can be troubling when one have a man undecided career part, but what you need to do is sincerely think about which of the two do you find more interesting while doing.
You can start your design journey from learning how to create blueprints of any space around you, rearranging of objects and furnitures. All these can be achieved with the usage of 3d modelling softwares. This can allow you be a freelancer and possibly allow you to combine it with crime solving.

Myrissa’s Answer

Hi Cece!

I also have a love for crime solving/mysteries! With technology advancing so much these days, there are so many exciting possibilities you can follow. There are a handful of ideas that come to mind:

-Crime/Mystery Podcast
-Since you like design - you could do a home decor, clothing line, make custom water bottles/hats, bags based on mystery/crime!
-You could write movies, books, and more!

Opportunities are endless! Remember that everyone started somewhere - you will too!

Eric’s Answer

Here's an obvious answer: Write fiction. Write about an interior designer who solves crimes. There are definitely people who would read a book like that. My wife like's a book series with a knitter who solves murders. This has the benefit that you can also sneakily teach your audience about interior design while the mystery carries them through the narrative.
