Hi Sophia-
Thank you for your question about a career as a Marine Biologist. You would need to go to college and get a degree. Typically a Marine Biology Degree takes between 4-5 years no matter what animals you want to study and work with. There are many different career paths. Some Marine Biologist focus on the mammals that live in the Oceans, such as whales, dolphins and sealions. There are other Marine Biologist that focus on sharks and rays, while others will spend time with corals or the many different fish species. Careers can lead you to work in large aquariums taking care of the animals. Other jobs focus on researching/studying the animals in the wild. When you are in college you should take the time to do summer internships so you can discover which path interest you the most.

Hi Sophia,
There are so many job options for you if you'd like a career in marine biology. You can would for private organizations like zoos. aquariums, aquarium store, dive operations, etc., work for a university, or work for the federal government (USDA, US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Institute, the Navy, etc.). While a Bachelor's degree in marine biology is a good option, you don't need one to start working in the field. You can start by becoming SCUBA certified, and then volunteer or get a job working for an organization like the New England Aquarium. While you're still in college you could be gaining valuable experience and earning money in the field. You could also get a job working in a research setting with a professor who is a marine biologist and you'll get lots of important training in the field even before you complete your BS Degree.
Good luck!
