Ollie’s Answer

Hi Julie, as a former adjunct professor at the graduate level, I've taught many psychology students & interns. Not just those studying school guidance or school adjustment, but those enrolled in other psychology programs. There are a number of possibilities today because the need is so great for mental health support at every level in our communities, from children to adults, to every socio-economic category & circumstance. You can intern at a number of community-based organizations & institutions. It all depends on your interests and what type of client group you want to work with. Those opportunities could be at schools (private, public, residential, elementary, high school & college), hospitals, family counseling centers (children, family, marital, individual), substance abuse counseling at residential treatment centers, etc. I had a graduate student who was a veteran and his professional goal was to become a counselor for vets, addressing battlefield trauma, adjustment to civilian life, etc. He was interning at a local Veterans Hospital. I also had a graduate student who was taking my course as an elective and majoring in pastoral counseling. She was studying to become a minister, so she was interning at a local church . My neighbor counsels ex-convicts. She is a probation officer. She works with juveniles in the court system, as well. There are also community-based recidivism programs to help reduce prison re-entry that need counselors ,too. I have named just a few. The list is not short & I think the opportunities are boundless. Good luck!

Ollie recommends the following next steps:

Narrow down what client group you have a desire to really work with.
If you want to do an appropriate internship, find out what local organizations provide mental health support services for your desire group.
Contact the organizations & have a phone or virtual interview. Most are in need of free help & professional volunteers.
