What Career is best for me?

I'm currently enrolled in a college as a freshman and I'm struggling to find a major. I am considering a History, Political Science, or maybe an urban studies major.

But I'm also struggling to find a career I would like to do as unlike a college major, I don't really have a idea what I want to do. A teacher seems interested though or maybe something in Law but I also want to find a career that not only makes me decent money But It is interesting for me and something I would love to do.

Any tips?

Let’s get you some internships over the summer… or even general entry level work in an industry you’re interested in. You can always change/ drop those first few weeks of school. Talk to you advisor about what the biggest gen-Ed requirements are in your school everyone has to have and get those knocked out quick. As you gain certainty from the work experiences, funnel into your department. Don’t be afraid to try an entry level job out there for a specific industry to get your foot in the door. (Some good examples for education: daycare, summer camp, or summer school assistant… maybe even admin assistant) For law, what type of law? If for example you’re interested in real estate law, maybe hang with a realtor… or get some public service intern work through your municipality. You can do it and will be great!

liberal Arts were you can choose classes of interest. There you can see which provides you the best interest and likeness of which career or major you may decide. Remember whatever decision you make should be something you enjoy studying and have great interest. And you can always change your mind and move into another direction. Decisions should be yours and not persuaded by others.

Tammy’s Answer

Hi Jabar! This can certainly be a tough choice. A great place to start would be to visit the career center on your campus. They have some excellent resources to help you discover not only future jobs and career paths but can give you insight into what majors might help get you there. Taking a career inventory test, engaging in some career design activities and career research are all things that center can provide to you.

Another great option might be to do some shadow day experiences with people in the field who work in the variety of fields you are considering. It might help you to zone in on whether or not that career is a good fit.

Since I’m guessing you haven’t declared a major yet, maybe try taking a course in each of the majors you are considering next semester (or over the summer). Talk with the program advisors in those majors and ask about job opportunities in that field and see what advice they can offer.

You might also consider a bachelors degree in one major and minoring in something else. Then perhaps going on to do a masters (or PhD) in related fields.

But lastly, just because you choose a major now does not mean you are stuck in that particular job/field forever. Many of the majors you mentioned can be related and while you might get a degree in one, you might work on another. You don’t have to have your whole life figured out now. Which field do you enjoy the most? Which one could you find yourself going down a rabbit hole reading topics and learning and wanting to know more about? Yes money is nice and you need to be mindful of picking a major which may lead to job opportunities but you also want to have passion and enjoy what you do.

Tammy recommends the following next steps:

Visit career design center on campus
Talk with academic advisor
Explore shadowing/internship opportunities in fields of interest
Take a variety of courses in each of the majors
Talk to each department to learn more
