In my opinion, the indispensable step that should be addressed sooner than later is the composition of your mission statement. Your mission statement should be specific and able to be boiled down into a single value. For example, "To be a trusted leader in a metrological laboratory setting" could be considered a mission statement. The value this statement could be boiled down to is trust. Regardless of the setting, a leader is trusted and inspires change in others.

Next, you search for a company with a matching mission statement or at least one that emphasizes your value of choice. In this example, trust is the value we will focus on. A recruiter reaches out to me asking if I am interested in working for ABC123 Laboratory. I look at their mission statement and trust is nowhere to be found. I respectfully decline. Another recruiter reaches out to me, from EFGF456 Labs. I look at their mission statement and it reads something like, "to be a trusted producer in metrological services."

At this point, I know at a minimum, if I do decide to work for EFG456, there is a 50/50 chance that our mission statements match. A good company is held accountable to its own standards. A bad company is not held accountable to its own standards. Further research into the company's turn-over rate or job satisfaction levels through perhaps Glassdoor will improve or degrade any confidence you have in committing to EFG456 Labs.

Lastly, the benefit of having a mission statement is it provides a clear, concise, and specific goal for your career trajectory. The desire to work in manufacturing is not specific enough.
