Hi Natalie! Are you referring to undergraduate living? If so, I think both options can have pros and cons! I think if you dorm you are closer to campus and it might be easier to attend classes and avoid any commuting. Of course you will end up being matched with a roommate for freshmen year, but in other years you can end up choosing a friend to dorm with! I did have classmates who also lived in apartments and this definitely also had its own benefits too. They had more room when compared to a dorm, and friends usually lived together. There are also some dorms on campuses that are larger and have an apartment like environment so it is something to consider. When renting an apartment, it can also be cheaper if you rent with other friends as compared to a dorm which can be costly. It's important to look in the area though, and make sure to rent in a safe and nearby location for school. There are websites that show apartments specifically for student living, I would definitely look into those! I wish you the best!

A. Michelle’s Answer

Team dormitory - especially during the freshman year. Staying in the dorm is an excellent opportunity to make new friends and enjoy essential services. Your dorm buddies are going through or have gone through similar experiences as you, making it an ideal environment to create a strong support group.

Ryan’s Answer

Hello,

If you are referring to undergraduate living options, I would recommend living in a dorm for a few years. Living in a dorm is very convenient for students as you are right on campus and have better access to campus buildings and resources. It helps to have the library/classrooms/food courts within a short walking distance when you are a busy college student.

Hi Natalie! Many large universities require freshman to live in campus dorms. I would highly recommend living in a dorm your freshman year. This is a great way to make friends and get involved with campus activities, such as philanthropies, sororities, and student clubs. There are plenty of places on campus to take breaks and study! After freshman year, I would suggest moving into an apartment so that you can have your own space.

Diane’s Answer

Hi Natalie, for undergrad, especially as a frosh/soph, I recommend dorm living. The first 1-2 years of college can be overwhelming and having the security, comfort and structure of dorm living can help you adapt. Plus, it provides you an opportunity to meet and make friends with many different people. If you have a core group of established friends living in the same area, as an upper classmate or obtaining a graduate degree, then dorm living may be too constrictive and apartment living may be the better option.

Nicholas’s Answer

For undergrad, definitely do a Dorm for at least Freshman year, it's a great way to make friends and find a community! For later school years where studying takes over, a good apartment would be best so you can focus on your studying. I did a lot of studying in college and living alone in an apartment, or even in a single room in an apartment with multiple people, was essential in giving me the private space to study and live my life.

John’s Answer

If you are a Freshman, I would definitely recommend living in a Dorm for at least one year. It is a great way to meet and connect with people. Personally, I met my best friends in my dorm and had a great experience. I then ended up living in an apartment with a few people from my floor the next year. I am going into my senior year and am living with the same people I met freshmen year so I would definitely encourage you to give the dorms a try.
