what education do you need to have when becoming an architect?

I want to be a urban architect and work with houses. I just really like how houses are built and how they are built.

Thank you comment icon You need to research Architecture and Master Planning to see what universities have these programs available. Kristen Klint

First, aim to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. It's a great idea to ensure the program is accredited by NAAB, if you can. This will set you on the right path for success!

David E.’s Answer

To prepare yourself for the college education required, in high school, you should consider art, math, sciences, social justice, and perhaps physics. All of these will help to open your mind to the type of critical thinking that is required for developing a designer's mindset. In college you can approach from two aspects; you can go to an accredited four-year college and study in a program of architectural design or you can study various aspects of art or art history. If you go the way of studying art history or fine art, you will then need to obtain a master's degree in architecture to practice. If you receive a bachelor's of architecture you will be able to move either to a firm to practice or go on for an advanced degree in architecture. You can also work in practice and pursue your master's degree while working.
