Char’s Answer

Hi Tiffany,
Here's the answers to your questions:

1. What is the education to become a registered nurse like?

Nursing school can be tough but it's exciting. You will take some courses in the classroom and some at a hospital. You'll learn how to take care of pretty much anyone: men, women, adults, teens, children, babies, elderly, pregnant mothers, critically ill, and more. You'll take nursing classes for about 2-3 years.

2. Is university of Colorado school of medicine and red rocks community college a good starting point?

Red Rocks has good reviews online. Students say that the teachers are good and teachers say they like the students. The school has medical assistant and nursing aide programs - great ways to start a nursing career.

Even though Red Rocks doesn't have an RN program, they work together with the Univ of Colorado's College of Nursing to make it easier for students who want to be an RN. Basically, you start at Red Rocks, then transfer to Univ of Colarado to finish your RN degree. Sounds like a great set up.

3. Does being a registered nurse help people?

Yes! As an RN, you will help patients all day long. You may even save lives.

4. Do they get good work hours to where you can still spend time with family?

Yes! Many nurses who work in hospitals are only required to work 3 days a week. You'll have 4 days off each week to spend with family. You will probably have to work some weekends though.

Becky’s Answer

Hello Tiffany,

These are great questions. To become a registered nurse, one must complete an associate's or bachelor's in nursing and then sit for a national exam to get a registered nurse license.

I am not familiar with the two educational institutions you mentioned. However, I started my own nursing career at a local community college, where I got my associate's degree in nursing, took my NCLEX exam, and became a registered nurse. I started working at a local hospital as a registered nurse while I continued my education and completed my bachelor's in nursing at a university.

Nursing is a service professional; they help not only the person who is sick but also the whole family unit.

A registered nurse can practice in many different settings, in any specialty, and with any age bracket. The working hours and pay depend on the position, and many institutions have various options.

Nursing provides a person the ability to pursue a career and have the flexibility to spend time with their family.

Setting a boundary between our personal and professional life and having a life-work balance is, in part, a personal decision and a skill we all need to develop.

Good Luck.

Becky
