How many scholarships/ how much money do I need to pay for college?

I'm wondering how many scholarships I should apply to and at point or amount is enough and I don't need any more. I don't want to have too much money and not use it, wasting the scholarship, and I don't want to have to go into debt. (If at all possible)

Hi Karuna,

It's going to depend upon the school you choose to attend. If you're in the U.S., in-state public schools are often more affordable than out-of-state private schools. To figure out how much money YOU will need, I recommend looking at the 'tuition and fees' of each of your school options.

One thing to keep in mind is that tuition is only half the battle. Many schools require their students to live on campus for their freshman year, and campus housing can be expensive, as can the attached meal plans. Then there are 'facility fees' for things like the university gym and the cost of textbooks.

When applying to scholarships, I recommend reading the fine print. While some scholarships will ONLY go towards tuition, others can be used for housing, food, books, and even study abroad experiences.

Overall, my best advice is to apply, apply, apply to any and all scholarships you find that you may be eligible for.

I would account for about $40k. But you need to decide on a school and see how much their rate is per credit hour. Then decide on a major and see how many credit hours you will need to complete the degree. You can also take classes at community colleges and transfer those credit hours to cut down on the credit hour cost. This will need to be confirmed first that the credits will transfer to your home college.
