No, you do not. There are trade schools and certification courses that help standardize skills. Is Buford in Georgia? If so, I located this website that lists several schools that focus on mechanics: https://usmechanicedu.com/ga/ all the best to you.

Ernie’s Answer

Trade schools are a good idea. For a career as a locomotive mechanic you can look for locomotive servicing companies in your area. If you don’t have mechanical experience, apply for a laborer position. As you prove yourself they will start teaching you mechanical. After five years you should have the experience to start applying to railroads.
This path allows you to make money while you learn.

Tyler’s Answer

As someone who went to a trade school and has been a mechanic for 8 years. Trade schools are always a good option to get your foot in the door job placement wise and a good place to learn the basics of being a mechanic. But, once you get into the trade go into it with the mindset that you will always learn something.
The older guy who has done it 30+ years knows more than anybody could dream. Open eyes and ears and learn from experiences and know you’ll make mistakes but learn from those mistakes.
