Michael’s Answer

I can't speak too much to the coursework, but doing well in your classes and demonstrating interest through extracurricular involvement in finance-like clubs is always helpful.

My main advice is be ready for recruiting because it starts early, earlier than you might think. I thought about going into IB (Investment Banking) but by the time I was looking for an internship it was already too late. Most banks that recruit on college campuses open applications for junior summer internships the summer before your sophomore year. So, if you have any interest in IB at all, you need to start talking to recruiters early, I'd say even as early as your freshman year. Get the conversation started so you can develop a professional relationship with your recruiter and get your name out there.

Everyone I know that wants to go into IB had their offers signed for junior summer internships around March of our sophomore year. I know it sounds like a lot, but don't let the process deter you. Even if you're a little late to the recruiting train, keep in touch with your recruiter and try to network with people on LinkedIn. Try to find allums from your school that are employees at the bank and send them a message to ask if they'd be willing to chat. The more you can do to get your name out there, the better of a shot you'll have. Let me know if that helps!

Michael recommends the following next steps:

Talk to your campus recruiter, if applicable.
Find your local recruiter on LinkedIn, or on the bank's website.

Ilse A’s Answer

Research the company: Before the interview, research the company thoroughly. Understand their mission, values, products/services, and recent news. This knowledge will help you tailor your responses and show your genuine interest.

Prepare and practice: Prepare answers to common interview questions, such as "Tell me about yourself" or "Why do you want to work here?" Practice your responses out loud, paying attention to your tone, clarity, and body language. This will boost your confidence and help you articulate your thoughts effectively.
