Xander XJS’s Answer

I would say piano

All though no instrument is better than any other, piano is one of the best visualizations for understand music theory. It's also a much more simple concept, compared to a guitar, which has 20 different ways to play one note.

It's also easier to learn other instruments once you learn piano, since you already understand the concepts of music from piano.

But once again, no instrument is better than another, they all have their uses and emotions that they can all evoke.

Tomas’s Answer

There isn't exactly a "best" instrument. Each one functions distinctively and produces its own special sounds. Moreover, the ideal choice relies on the type of music you're creating and the specific style you wish to achieve.

Angelo’s Answer

Hello Richard,

The ideal musical instrument for you is the one you will play.

Remember, the "10,000 hours of deliberate practice" rule suggests that you'll be spending a significant amount of time alone with your instrument as you strive to master it. So, it's essential that you truly love the sounds you can produce with it.

Also, it's worth noting that all college music majors, regardless of their primary instrument of choice, are required to grasp the basics of piano. Typically, this involves four semesters of piano lessons in a small class.

Wishing you all the best on your musical journey!

Angelo recommends the following next steps:

Listen to good music, composed well and performed excellently by a top player.
For example, If you are considering the cello, find a live performance of Yo Yo Ma. If guitar, Chet Atkins or Eddie Van Halen. Etc.........

Katharine’s Answer

I like the piano, but I couldn't eat a whole one. (Sorry, this is an old fashioned joke).

I think every instrument has it's joys and difficulties. It depends on the type of music you wish to create, your resources (pianos are expensive and take up a lot of space for someone starting out, guitars less so).

Alexander’s Answer

What everyone else said + it depends on what you're wanting to accomplish as a musician & what genre of music you like the most (which will change over time)...

Some thoughts...
+ Play in a band? Typically, most sought out are bassists & drummers - but if you start one yourself, any instrument will do.
+ Improve your theory? Piano is very visual and IMO, easiest to see & understand theory. You can snag digital keyboards at a very low cost.
+ Don't forget that your voice is also an instrument & is unique to you!
