What pathways, scholarships, schools, and careers do you recommend for a student interested in helping others in either a medical or psychological way?

I am a 9th grader and a part of the medicare pathway at the Career Elevation and Technology Center. I love helping people and don't want to be around a computer the whole day. I have thought about being a pediatrician, as I love little kids, as well as a psychologist. However, I would love to know other pathways available to me

Chris’s Answer

Consider looking into therapy as a career path - specifically as a marriage and family therapist, or maybe even as a child psychologist in a school setting.

There are many opportunity in medicine and nursing, though there is considerable charting and sometimes it takes longer then the time spent with the patient. There are also many healthy careers in the military that they will pay for the training.

Hi RJ,

I had a very similar thought process as you... I was very adamantly against getting a desk job and knew I wanted to work with people in a healthcare field. I found the career of occupational therapy aligned very well with my values when I started shadowing various health professionals in high school. Occupational therapists works in various settings and across all populations (pediatrics is a heavy focus). At the core of the OT profession we treat clients from a holistic perspective, which is taking all parts of an individual into consideration (physical, mental, environmental, situational, etc.). As a practicing OT my experience has mainly been in pediatrics, outpatient-sensory integration clinic and school based settings. I love that in this profession you have the flexibility to transition between a medical and educational model. I definitely think reaching out to find shadowing opportunities will be helpful with exploring different professions and seeing what a typical day looks like for them. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any additional questions and good luck with the search!
