This exposure can help you learn rapidly, build a set of tools for evaluating new scenarios, and hopefully discover a sector or function that ignites your passion. The beauty of consulting is that it doesn't require a specific background. Most consulting firms don't focus on degrees, instead, they value the expertise you acquire through practical applications. In my initial career choice, I happily landed on management consulting. This was a fantastic choice for me as it opened up the exciting world of travel. The best part was, I could save money while exploring new places because my work covered all my expenses on the go. Plus, I was able to rack up those frequent traveler points for some great free vacations!

But the benefits didn't stop at travel. This career path also gave me a ticket to experience a variety of industries. It was like getting a backstage pass to how different businesses operate.

Moreover, it helped me polish my presentation and communication skills. I got to learn from some incredibly intelligent and experienced people who were part of my project team.

And let's not forget about the clients, often C-level executives. Learning from them was an experience in itself. So, all in all, choosing management consulting as my first career was a decision I'll never regret. It was a journey filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences.

Christopher’s Answer

After 3 years as a consultant, the things I enjoy most are the diversity of engagements and the improvement in my presentation and project management skills.
As a consultant I'm generally only working on projects for 3-6 months before I switch to something completely different. Each job can be different from the last! So if I dislike any engagement for some reason, I know it will end soon. The variety really helps prevent the job from getting old.
Possibly the most important skill you need as a consultant is the ability to make pretty -and informative- powerpoint slides to share with clients. I make powerpoint slides every day. When you're presenting them to clients though, you need to be calm, professional, and confident. Practice makes perfect and my meeting skills have become so much better since I started consulting. The next most important skill is your ability to keep track of project work and not miss any deadlines. This is handy skill outside of projects. I've started to use task tracking techniques in my regular life to get more done haha.

Hi Logan.

I went into consulting after college because I thought it would keep the most doors open for me in the future while letting me explore various options. Similar to what many have already said on this thread, I think the flexibility allows you to develop your career in a meaningful way.

My experience has been incredibly positive, so I'd highly recommend considering consulting as a potential career path. That said, I don't think a career in consulting has to happen immediately. I've met many people who worked in other industries and now use those experiences to their benefit in consulting. The point being that entry points into consulting are just as flexible as the job itself.

Hello Logan, Here's a perspective based on my journey as a consultant:
1. Engaging with a variety of companies: Consulting offers the chance to collaborate with numerous clients. You'll experience a wide range of companies, each with their unique challenges and solutions.
2. Collaborating with diverse people and teams: You'll likely be teaming up with various groups and individuals within your consulting firm. This dynamic environment means you'll interact with more people than in other jobs where you might be part of the same team for years. It's a great way to understand and learn from different working and leadership styles.
3. Creating a network within your consulting community: Consultants are typically inquisitive individuals, keen on exploring a variety of topics. You'll become part of a network of people doing intriguing things both inside and outside of consulting. Plus, there's often an alumni network that allows you to maintain connections with your colleagues, even after you've moved on from the company.

Max’s Answer

Hi Logan!
I would say the best thing about consulting is the freedom it provides to learn about many different industries and gain many different skill sets. I've been in consulting for almost 2 years, and no two projects have been the same. I've been on large projects helping to manage a group of people and conduct workshops, and I've been on small projects with just a few people looking at models and risk assessments. These projects all lend themselves to different ways of thinking, and the skills you gain from one project can be used in the next project and so on. It's also a great way to learn about a multitude of industries and stay up to date with current events that could potentially impact your project.

Another great thing about consulting that goes hand in hand with the first one I mentioned is that when you're on all these different kinds of projects, you get to work with so many different people who all have great ideas and different ways to view things. Some people will be in your same consulting group, and some will be from a different group. I work in Financial Crimes, and I've worked with many people from the Transformation practice and also the Tech and Data practice. It's always interesting to get their perspective on things, and I feel like I always walk away with new skills after working with all these different kinds of people. Collaboration is definitely a key to consulting and one of its best aspects.

Hope this information helps!

Hello! I currently work in risk consulting within the Hospitality industry and it definitely has some perks! Starters, I just like to be part of a team and they are all so understanding with other commitments I might have so that is nice. Another thing about it that i truly enjoy is the client facing part of it. Unlike other accounting professions, I am not always tied to my desk but I go to Client corporate offices to introduce myself and get to know everyone else that is part of the team. And best for last, since I do work in Hospitality many places that I tend to visit during our engagements are in the hotels that my clients own. Some hotels are definitely better than others but since my client has hotels ranging from Mexico to Jamaica, it is truly a blessing! I have never imagined traveling out of the country for my job and i cherish every moment of it. Not to mention, never even seeing Jamaica before so that was a blessing even though it was for work. An opportunity I am proud of taking!

Hello Violaine!

You've asked a brilliant question! In my opinion, the beauty of consulting lies in its diversity. It's not just the same old routine every day, which can be the case in many industries. Plus, it's a field that's bursting with chances to learn and grow, keeping you up-to-date with market trends and client needs. It also encourages you to step outside your comfort zone, dive into new sectors, and broaden your knowledge base.

Before I became a consultant, I was part of the industry and often felt trapped in a monotonous cycle of the same tasks week after week. Switching to consulting has been like a breath of fresh air, making my work life much more fulfilling and exciting.

Best of luck!

María Belén’s Answer

Hi Logan!
In line with some of the previous answers you've received, I should say flexibility has been a great plus for me. It's a very challenging career that pushes people to develop many different skills and the opprotunity to develop knowledge from different industries.
I'd stress a few themes that have made my experience really motivating:
1. The skills you develop in consulting can be applied everywhere in your life (both soft and hard skills). I've learned, for example, how to communicate better, and that has given me an edge in both personal and professional conversations. The ability to synthesize, the habit of participate in conversations with your own perspective, and problem structuring are other skills, usually undervalued, that I've acquired that have already been extremely useful in my life in general.
2. The work is very intellectually stimulating. Curious people tend to get bored quite quickly in roles that tend to be repetitive and cyclical. Consulting' everyhing far from that, in my experience. I've met really smart people that keep conversations engaging and stimulating. I feel challenged everyday, and feel pushed to challenge myself as well.
3. Feedback is key to keep moving forward and advancing. Feedback culture has helped me focus on my strengths and develop new skills. Most consulting firms encourage employees to seek for feedback from colleagues, and everyone gets into the habit of developing skills to both givce and receive feedback. It's a great way to pause and think what someone can do differently to advance professionally and get a good experience out of their work with a team.
Hope this is helpful, and good luck!

I get to connect with my clients on a personal level, and it's incredibly rewarding to know that my work is making a real, positive difference in the world.

My role involves guiding healthcare corporations to stay compliant with federal regulations, which in turn ensures that individuals receive top-notch care from these institutions. I also have the privilege of assisting smaller, emerging healthcare businesses. By helping them flourish in the industry, I'm enabling them to provide the best possible service to their communities.
