How do I find more hobbies to expand my scholarship applicability?

I'm only in 9th grade, so I know I have time, but I'm starting to think about college scholarships. I'm on a swim team but I'm not particularly fast compared to kids my age and even younger. I'm a straight A student but I know scholarships will require a little more than just academic success. How can I expand? Swim takes up a lot of time and I love it, so I'm not willing to sacrifice that, but I know I need to expand a little. I'm interested in musical theatre and singing, but struggling to find theatre opportunities for teens who are newer to the stage. How can I find something that'll work for me and make me a well rounded kid who's more applicable for scholarships?

My suggestion is to do some volunteer activities. You could serve a few meals to the homeless or volunteer at a one-time event. You can then add Volunteer Experience to your applications and include the skills you learned by volunteering (team skills, flexibility, appreciation of various cultures, etc. Volunteering also demonstrates that you value helping others.

With every good wish.

First of all, good for you for thinking about this so early! It sounds like you are already off to a great start. Obviously sports and music are some great options, but they aren't the only thing. I have found that a lot of colleges love it when somebody has a track record of volunteer service/charity work. Being regularly involved in those types of activities are great, but if you took it one step further and took the initiative to organize some sort of charity event/organization I think it would really help you jump off the page.

Additionally, lots of times colleges will have certain scholarships specific to a certain thing (focused on something other than just grades/general application stuff). Similarly, sometimes there are third party scholarships that come from sources other than the school, and are contingent on involvement in certain groups or certain activities. I would also recommend looking those up, particularly if you have some schools that you are interested in. It is worth researching the particular school to see if they do something like this.
Thank you comment icon I will definitely keep this in mind as I start thinking about specific schools. This was super informative, thank you so much for your help! Linnea
