Good luck with pursing your studies in Psychology!

While I do not have a degree or background in Psychology, I believe my answer applies universally regardless of major.

I would not advise you heed too much to published rankings to gauge the suitability of a particular Psychology program. These rankings are usually too broad of a measure and likely won't apply to your particular situation. It'd be like deciding where to buy a house based on a magazine ranking of neighborhoods Such ranking will likely not factor in your specific tastes and interests.

I'm not saying to disregard those rankings completely either since those rankings do influence how employers perceive the quality of a degree at a particular school. But use rankings as one of an arsenal of research tools.

The best way to know if a university is right for you is to research greater detail on its Psychology program and what kind of formal relationships it has to employers, government organizations and to other schools. These relationships will open doors to seminars, internships or employment opportunities during your years at that school.

Lastly, I'd look up the university's faculty list and shoot some professors a short email asking if you'd be good fit for their school. Of course, don't write a long novel as they're probably too busy to reply in detail. But I'd wager most would be flattered that you're seeking their advise and will give a reply, if only a short one.

Again, good luck!

Kora,

Studying the intricacies of the human experience is central to a psychology program. With a graduate degree, psychologists are able to work in health facilities, schools and the government. These are the top psychology programs. Each school's score reflects its average rating on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding), based on a survey of academics at peer institutions.

  1. Stanford University
    Stanford, CA (4.8)

  2. University of California—Berkeley
    Berkeley, CA (4.7)

  3. University of California—Los Angeles
    Los Angeles, CA (4.7)

  4. Harvard University
    Cambridge, MA (4.6)
