James’s Answer

AI holds immense potential and can be harnessed across a wide spectrum of the economy, from services such as tourism and outsourcing, to sectors like mining, agriculture, education, banking, research, manufacturing, and even government. Quantum computing, while powerful, may not be as readily applicable across all sectors. It's primarily beneficial for users requiring large-scale data analysis and processing.

Furthermore, the tech world is rapidly shifting towards cloud computing, with most users opting not to own personal computers. Instead, they prefer utilizing cloud services from providers such as AWS or Microsoft. In this light, Quantum computing is likely to emerge as another service offered by these cloud providers in the future. So, if there's a need for Quantum computing, users can conveniently access it on-demand from their preferred cloud service provider.

Here's to success in all your endeavors!

Hagen’s Answer

Nuh, yours is a precocious question. In my mind there's no question that AI is a more practical choice. Although I am not a quantum scientist, I've spent many hours researching quantum computing and quantum computing still has a lot of very hard problems to solve. That's not say they won't get solved but that path is dramatically more speculative than AI which is here and having it's moment and impact now.
I lived in Nigeria back in the 70s and my mother worked in public health Eritrea in the 80s so I have a feel for life in Africa. Most people's needs and wants are more likely to benefit from AI in areas in healthcare, agriculture and business. While AI in those markets are still emerging worldwide everything I am reading suggests AI will quickly permeate the job market making it a critical career skill as well. Your opportunities to help are greater with AI and you may find you need AI just to enter the game.

One of the things I have learned in my advanced years is technology and technological skill must be applied to be of use and, frankly, to be any fun. So except in rare academic arenas, AI or quantum computing doesn't really exist separate from real world problems in real business contexts such as healthcare. That implies you'll need two goals; 1) become technically and scientifically competent, but 2)develop those skills inside a domain. You'll need domain knowledge such as how healthcare is funded, delivered, managed etc. AND AI skills you can apply to those challenges.

So think about where you want to have an impact and then tailor your training and technical expertise so you can make a difference in that arena.

Finally, you don't need to wait to start your journey. Too many people your age think they have to wait to get a college or advanced degree to do ANYTHING. Education is a very useful stopping point on your journey but your journey doesn't start or end there. There's so many ways to learn today (books, videos and probably methods I am too old to comprehend). You can start learning today. Even 15 minutes of learning a day can change your life and help you change the lives of those around you.

Hagen recommends the following next steps:

READ about everything and anything that interests you.
Research - there are hours and hours of free AI videos on academy.nvidia.com
Pick how and where you think you want to engage (where you want to help) and learn all you can about those issues too.

Andrew’s Answer

For a developing country, any discipline in the STEM field would be beneficial for her development.

For an individual, if he/she is interested in STEM field, it is important to match his/her interest and strength in picking a discipline to go into. This is a serious consideration because one must devote considerable time and energy to a chosen discipline.

If you are still in high school, you should invest your time and energy in the language of science and technology, which is mathematics., to be prepared for the rigor of a STEM student career in college.

If you are already in college, it would be ideal if you are already in mathematics, physics, and electrical engineering. Either the AI field or quantum computing should be an option for your future career pursuit.

Most importantly, go where your heart is, and follow your passion. Whichever field you choose, you should be able to serve your country well in the future.

Reply to your question/comment:

Your major in applied physics is great preparation in either AI or quantum computing. Have you considered pursuing your graduate degree in computational physics, which should get you into quantum computing.

Since you are also exposed to considerable programming experience in applied physics, you should be well prepared for an AI graduate degree.
What do you think?
Thank you comment icon Thank you very much sir. I have studied applied physics now want to special in computer science. If I study computer science how can it help me with this process Hanipa

Hello Hanipa,
I suggest you to start from the quantum computing free online courses, to get the fundamentals and understand the impact of this new technology on our life. If you are able to understand the basic concepts of this kind of new way of computation, you can perform the first steps in direction of Y2Q. There are new incoming businesses, very impacting our society. Thanks
