How to find a job with no experience at 14 years old?

I'm 14 and searching online my mother and I cannot find anywhere hiring under the age of 15. My options are limited as I would have to work part time due to school starting again. I am willing to work on weekends as well. The only experience I have is watching my siblings and sometimes my nieces. I would like to have an after school job that I can walk to. Thank you.

14 can often be a frustrating age in that you are too old to be young and too young to be old! My 3 children went through it in our area when looking for work at your age. Pet sitting became a very real option once the word got out amongst neighbors and friends. You will need reliable transportation however because it's a really serious commitment. I would echo what others have said: volunteer for a year somewhere. YMCA often has babysitting situations and will train you. One of my kids became a lifeguard through the YMCA; they certified her and got her working. Craig's list jobs can be misleading and scams so I would advise staying clear of there. You can also seek employment opportunities through your school as well; they usually offer the service of getting working papers (papers signed by your parents that give you permission to work underage) established. Good luck and stay safe!

Iya’s Answer

Greetings Chelsea,

I admire your drive and ambition to jump into the workforce. It’s sending entrepreneur future business owner vibes.

There are a few things you can do below to begin the process to progress. Each state is different when it comes to legal working age. Check to see what your state offers.

1. Become a peer mentor at your local Boys & Girls Club.

2. Become a youth counselor at your church.

3. Introduce your babysitting business to your neighbors, family and friends.

4. Look into walking dogs around your schedule.

5. Gather lightly worn items that you no longer need and sell them on your Facebook store.

No matter what you choose never lose your drive.

Wishing you the best!

Hi Chelsea,

This is too soon and too early! I think it's better if you wait another year. I know a peer who started working when she was 15 or 16 years old. You can start working at a retail store or a restaurant. They don't require a degree. I also know a peer who started to have an internship when she was 16 years old! If you find a major you're interested in, then maybe you should try to apply for an internship during the school year. I think it's better if you first volunteer at your local community. That way you will gain more experience and you will build self-confidence!
