Karen’s Answer

Hope as you read this you are taking some deep breaths and each day take time to relax, perhaps take a walk or look up in the sky and imagine what's in the clouds. Taking time to do things that calm you may lessen your stress.

If you can focus on the word Trust and its meaning you can perhaps change those feelings of stress about the future to Trust that all will turn out well. Picture yourself doing something you might really enjoy or feel good about doing, whether that's being a doctor, singer or possibly a parent. Imagine how you will feel when you know you've accomplished your goals.

For now, keep on enjoying your life because we never know if tomorrow will ever come.

With every good wish.

Katie’s Answer

Hi Olivia!

First thing I want to say is, it's completely normal to feel stressed about your future. It happens to a lot of people and especially students thinking about next steps in life! You might feel pressure from others, like your family or friends, and wonder if you're making the right choices. It can be overwhelming. You are not alone though, and it's okay to feel all of these things.

Here are some tips to make things easier:

1. *Be Kind to Yourself:* Remember, it's okay to feel unsure. Don't be too hard on yourself. Treat yourself with kindness and know that you're doing your best.

2. *Explore & Listen to your Heart:* Take some time to figure out what you love and what interests you the most a part from other people's opinions. What makes you feel relaxed and calm? What did you like to do as a kid to have fun? Go to your favorite place and think - or there are a lot of other ways to process:

- Journaling: I share my journal with no one, and so it's a safe space for me to say whatever I want to say however I want to say it. If I feel like thoughts are about to explode out of my head or I'm full of feelings, I like to use journaling to do "stream of consciousness" writing where I don't worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation and just write out everything that comes to mind. It helps! When the thoughts are out of your head, you can think clearly (and maybe help get rid of some of that stress).
- Audio/Video diaries: I'll use voice memos on iPhone and just say whatever comes to mind or how I am feeling. I keep these private and sometimes won't go back to them, but I always feel better after saying my thoughts and feelings out loud. You can also delete them after of course!
- Get outside: Go on a walk, sit on the swings at a nearby playground, or go outside and take pictures of anything that is interesting to you. Getting outside can help you relax and think.
- Make a vision board! Get some magazines, stickers, etc and glue them to some construction paper or printer paper. You can also pin them to a bulletin board. Keep this vision board where you can see it and use it to remind you of what makes you happy and inspires you.

3. *Try New Things:* Explore different activities, clubs, or jobs. This way, you can find out what you enjoy and what you don't. There are also online quizzes to take to get more information about your personality and what jobs/careers might be interesting for you. I love the Enneagram: https://www.truity.com/test/enneagram-personality-test

4. *Talk to People:* Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your school's career counselor or someone you trust, like a teacher or family member. They can give you great advice and support and may tell you something new about yourself that you hadn't noticed before.

5. *Take It Step by Step:* Instead of stressing over your whole future, break it down into smaller steps. Focus on what you can do now and take it one step at a time. If you're in school right now, just focus on getting everything done that you need to in school. If you're not in school and stressing about a job, just remember that your next job doesn't have to be THE job. It's an opportunity to learn what you like and don't like. You'll get there!

6. *It's Okay to Change:* Your plans might change along the way, and that's perfectly fine! People change their minds all the time, and it's part of discovering what truly works for you. It's never too late to do something new.

7. *Enjoy the Present:* While thinking about the future is important, don't forget to enjoy the present too. Make time for fun activities and things you love. Taking some deep breaths helps bring me back to the present when I get too caught up.

You don't have to have everything figured out right now. It's okay to take your time and explore your options. Trust me, things will fall into place as you go along. Keep your chin up, stay positive, and believe in yourself—you've got a bright future ahead! 😊
Thank you comment icon +1 on the journaling! I know it sounds very simple but writing my thoughts down keeps me from ruminating on the same thing over and over again. Highly recommend trying it! Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Auto evaluation is important and it will teach you a lot about yourself.

There's a reason why you're stressed about the future, let's find first what is it and then try to find the solution to it :)

The best way is to think what is making you feeling this way.

Writing down what bothers you, it gives you an opportunity to see clearly how to solve equal each problem

For example: If I'm stressed that I have hard time to waking up early every morning, I will list the reasons why I think this is happening. Maybe I play video games until late night giving me a hard time to go sleep or I'm failing on sticking to a routine before bed.

The solution: setting a timer so I play less and go to bed on time and create a routine to wake up like start stretching right after my alarm goes off in the morning. Idk this is just an Idea lol. I hope it helps.

Kaori recommends the following next steps:

Ask yourself what makes you stressed about the future
Write down a list of your concerns
Write down possible solutions to each concern
Look for a friend or someone you trust to talk about it
Make a plan to overcome your fears

Maybe your putting to much pressure on yourself, relax and enjoy life because life goes by fast. If you give your all that should be enough. Be happy with what you accomplish everyday. Let that satisfy you.

Afrad’s Answer

Hello Olivia,

Experiencing stress or anxiety about what lies ahead is a common feeling. It often stems from the uncertainty of our future. While we can control some aspects, many remain beyond our grasp. It's commendable that you're contemplating your future, as it aids in planning, making wise choices, and carving your own path, rather than blindly following the crowd.

However, while forward-thinking is beneficial, there are strategies to help manage stress and anxiety associated with it. A key thing to remember is that fretting over uncontrollable factors is futile. This leaves you with the aspects you can influence, and that's where your focus should be. Essentially, concentrate on the areas you can control and lessen your worries about those you can't.

Here's a saying that I often turn to when I feel overwhelmed:
If you are Depressed, you are living in the Past,
If you are Anxious, you are living in the Future,
If you are at Peace, you are living in the Present.

This serves as a reminder for me to appreciate the present and recognize the positive aspects of my life. I hope it can provide some comfort to you as well!

Wishing you all the best!
