Hello, Jules !
In order to become an Ultrasound Technician, you will need a college degree which is approximately 4 years. If you get an Associates Degree or a Bachelors Degree in one of the health fields, you can than go on for your Ultrasound Certification which will take about ten to eighteen months. I would highly advise getting the Bachelors Degree as it would carry more weight in job competition and more importantly, will give you stronger, better and more knowledge which is needed in all health fields.
In college, I would suggest taking anatomy, chemistry, biology. Your college guidance counselor will be more accurate with specific courses and it will depend on your major.
You are fortunate to be in Los Angeles because L.A. has more than 70 colleges. You'll want to choose one that has a very strong health science department. If you know that your financial situation will handle it, look at UCLA and USC first. Pepperdine University in Malibu is superb, too but these are expensive so you'll have to figure in what your budget will be like, scholarships, financial assistance and help from family are always a good contribution and help. Do not hesitate to explore some schools such as California State University, Los Angeles, L.A. City College and others. Visit their campus and speak to the science department staff and students there.
Once you obtain your Bachelors degree in a science, you will than go for your Ultrasound Certification. That's where your class focus will be on science and learning how to operate the machines and devices that are used in ultrasound exams on patients.
You can go to Cypress College where you can earn an Associates Degree and the certification. This school ranks high. CBD College is right there in Los Angeles. Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa is also good. If you decide not to get a Bachelors Degree first, these colleges will be good for your Associates and the Certification.
Some prerequisite courses you will need to take in school in order to be prepared to be certified will be : Anatomy, Physiology, College Algebra, General Physics, English Composition, a Biology course which includes anatomy, physiology and microbiology, Psychology/Sociology, and Medical Terminology.
I hope that this helps you take some steps towards decisions about your education and I wish you a very happy academic experience and all the best for a wonderful career !
