As a 17-year-old turning into an adult, there are several things to consider and focus on to navigate this transition successfully. Here's some thought-out advice:

1. Education and Career: Continue to prioritize your education and explore potential career paths. Take advantage of opportunities for internships, part-time jobs, or vocational training to gain practical experience and clarity about your interests and skills.

2. Financial Responsibility: Start learning about money management. Understand budgeting, saving, and the importance of building a strong financial foundation for your future.

3. Health and Well-being: Make your health a priority by adopting a balanced lifestyle. Regular exercise, nutritious eating habits, and sufficient rest are essential to ensure your well-being as you enter adulthood.

4. Personal Growth: Embrace personal growth and self-awareness. Recognize your strengths and areas for improvement, and work on building confidence and resilience.

5. Relationships: Cultivate healthy relationships with family, friends, and peers. Communication and empathy are crucial in building strong connections.

6. Decision Making: Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. Be prepared to make important choices about your education, career, and life path.

7. Independence: Gradually take on more responsibilities and become more independent. This includes learning essential life skills such as cooking, laundry, and basic household chores.

8. Time Management: Learn to manage your time effectively, balancing academic, social, and personal commitments.

9. Mental Health: Prioritize your mental health. If you face challenges or emotional difficulties, don't hesitate to seek support from trusted adults or professionals.

10. Legal Matters: Familiarize yourself with legal responsibilities and rights that come with adulthood, such as understanding contracts, voting, and driving regulations.

Remember, this transition is a journey, and it's okay to seek guidance from mentors or older adults who can offer valuable insights based on their experiences. Embrace this phase with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, as it sets the foundation for a fulfilling and successful adulthood.

Michelle’s Answer

There is really no need for worry or being anxious moving into adulthood. It comes fast for some and slower for others. The more important thing is to never ever compare yourself with other people or base your image ideas upon what someone else says or does. Seventeen is quite an exciting age but yes, can be challenging in some ways.

The things you do now at seventeen will greatly affect your life ten years from now. That is one guarantee. This is an important stage of life, one in which you must discover what your interests are and what you see as your long term goals. Follow your interests and think about going to college for a degree or a trade school for a good trade. Pay no attention to what the others are doing. This is your time to figure out your future life and you'll want to make it an enjoyable one.

Think about what it means to be an adult, mature in many ways, but make a list of what you consider to be the traits of successful adults. See which traits on the list you still need growth in and which ones you have already attained. It does get easier as time moves on. Also, think about the various cause and effects of various things. Think about the benefits and consequences of various choices. Like I have mentioned, what you do now, how your life goes now, will greatly affect your life ten years from now.

You can lean on the wisdom of adults you know well, your particular spiritual walk and trusted teachers. Always ask questions and ask some adults about decisions that they made that led to success as well as ones that taught them their mistakes. However, throw worry and anxious feelings out the door because they will become barriers in your attempt to discover your personal journey.

There are no books or magic answers, no media or special tricks to becoming an adult. It is something that just happens and happens differently and at a different pace for each individual. Give yourself room to be you. And as you go through your discovery, you very well may be a good role model for others who will appreciate your positive influence.

David’s Answer

Excellent query.

Jacob indeed provided some exceptional advice and pointers. To that, I'd love to add the following.

It's crucial to be discerning and thoughtful when picking your companions and those you choose to spend your time with. Their influence on you can be significant. It's your call to determine if they exert a positive or negative impact. If they don't contribute to your progress towards your ambitions and dreams, then it might be time for a rethink.

Education is a powerful tool that can lift you to heights you never imagined. Dig deep within your soul, your spirituality, and your life experiences to find what truly brings you joy and where your potential lies. Identify three areas you'd love to delve deeper into, areas that could be the foundation of a lifelong career. Seek out the best place to study and gear up for it. Any funds you invest in your education, particularly in something you're passionate about and that can also provide a livelihood, will undoubtedly be the best investment you'll ever make. Trust me on this.

Bear in mind, not everyone is willing to put in the hard work, not everyone is dedicated enough, and not everyone possesses a strong will and tenacity. Hence, there will be individuals who might try to knock you off your path to happiness and success. You need to be resilient and resolute to stay on track.

Growing up is a natural process that all humans experience, becoming older and hopefully wiser. Only those who can apply the wisdom gleaned from their elders' experiences can progress and lead a life filled with rich experiences and relationships. Life is a never-ending journey of learning. If you can improve on what those before and around you have done, you've made progress. Improvement means striving not to repeat the errors of those who came before us, errors that cost them valuable time in their pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. Some people, unfortunately, keep repeating the same mistakes as their predecessors, perpetuating their negative cycles.

Always be mindful of the effect you have on those around you. Strive to make it a positive one and exercise common sense for the benefit of everyone around you. You'll appreciate it when others reciprocate.

I wish you the very best and encourage you to continue seeking guidance when needed. Nobody came into this world with all the knowledge. Adulthood requires bravery and determination, as you become accountable for others. You transition from being your parents' responsibility to standing on your own feet and taking care of others.
