Hi Lea,

There's a wide variety of essay formats you can use, including MLA, APA, and Chicago, among others. If you're capable of writing in these styles, you're already making progress. It's also crucial to choose a topic that resonates with the college community. To do this, it would be beneficial to research the types of topics commonly written about by college students. I hope this advice proves useful!

Fernando’s Answer

If this is about essay for college admission think of the essay as a way of introducing yourself to the college. What are your academic and career goals? What inspired you to pursue them? Structure the essay in a way in which the answers flow into one another. If you want to make it feel more personal expand on each of your goals the same way you'd do when talking to any other person. You want to avoid coming across as dry or overly formal. Now, while it's important to come across as humble when writing a college essay, don't sell yourself short. If there's a personal accomplishment that you're proud of, bring it up and elaborate on the experience. Be sure to re-read the essay and even read it out loud to make sure you spot any flaws or grammar mistakes.
