How would I go about becoming a successful psychologist as a future career?

I am currently a senior and I'm interested on going to college to major in sociology since I'm taking a sociology class currently this semester. However, the more research I do, the more interesting i find a psychology profession to be as a future career. I really enjoy learning why people think and act the way they do, as well as helping everyone i can, in anyway that i can. I'm just curious to know, if i were to major in psychology, how would i go about doing so and becoming successful at it? #caring #respectful

Hi Tyler,

There are many parts of psychology that you can go into! If you are interested in becoming a therapist/counselor, you will need to eventually obtain your masters degree in counseling psychology or social work. If you want to be a psychologist (more interested in psych testing), you will need to obtain your undergraduate degree, masters degree, and a PhD (~8-10 years of higher education). There are also school psychologists, educational psychologists, developmental, or clinical psychologists. Getting an undergraduate degree in psychology will help give you a broader understanding on what part of psychology you are interested in pursuing.

Hope that helps!

Thank you comment icon Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it a lot. I'll continue to do more research on great local schools in my area that offer these degrees. Thanks agian for the help Tyler
