How can I go about getting medical internships and apprenticeships as a high schooler?
I live in NJ near Monmouth county and I am having a hard time finding internships and/or apprenticeships. Anyone have any ideas or opportunities?

Would be best to do a bit of research. You could ask ChatGPT to give a list of Medical centres and Hospitals that are open to volunteering and internships. Then you may choose from the list and send cold emails.
Thank you so much, Chidozie!

Sure, I'd also suggest trying out cold calls or emails. It's often about who you know, but don't forget you can always get in touch with doctors you've been to before, like your childhood doctor, and see if they'd be open to assisting you or putting you in touch with others. It's a friendly and easy way to expand your network.

Hello, Gurbaani !
There is a "summer experience" offered to high school students in Camden, NJ at Coriell Institute for Medical Research, but it's in the summer. Monmouth University in West Long Branch also offers one, but it is in the summer, too. Of course there are also volunteer and shadowing opportunities. Since the two medical experiences near you are offered in the summer, what you may want to do is learn first aid, CPR, and take individual trainings or learning experiences separately. A link to a list of CPR classes, both on line, hybrid or in person is in the link below. CPR training is better taken in person, though.
Keep in mind that you can apply for the volunteer work at a hospital by completing applications and going through the hospital's other procedures.
Manmouth Medical Center has a volunteer department and the phone number to the hospital is (732) 222-5200 and they are in Long Branch. In the meantime, do not hesitate to do some research on your own. If you know what realm of medicine you like best, read books about that subject. It is also difficult to know why you are having no results with finding an internship or opportunity but it may be that the providers may have an age requirement. Keep applying for all the opportunities you find out about.
I hope that this information has provided some help and I wish you all the best in your studies and future career !

One foolproof way is to cold call/cold email. A lot of medical places won't have clinicals or internships advertised anywhere, but have doctors/nurses/etc that are willing to mentor students. A better way to approach would be to look up places near you that you are willing to travel to, then look at their websites for direct contact information for a doctor or healthcare professional. This is usually a call line or an email. Have a script prepared for the phone and an email outline for emails ready so you can email and call/leave voicemails as needed.
The other way is to join a club or find peers who are also interested in the same field and see what they're doing. They might have a connection that you may be able to use. Even friends who have parents who are healthcare professionals may have a network that they would be open to sharing with you!
You're going to get a lot of no's or no response, but don't get disheartened!
