I too aspire to be this but I sadly lack the drawing skills and the time to properly learn the techniques.
Some advice that the late Monty Oum (Creator of RWBY, Animator on Red vs. Blue) said was to watch a lot of movies or animations and I see why. That will inspire you firstly but also once you get the eye for story and animation, you’ll pick up techniques different story tellers and animators do and begin to apply that to your own work. My writing is often inspired by what I hear and read.
And of course the most important thing is tenacity. I know animation takes a really long time to create and tiring. But you can’t give up, you have to motivate yourself to see your work through and show off to the world something you made and that you’re proud of.
So just keep at it and take after the works that inspired you to be an animator.
Hope that helps and hey, I’d be down to work with an animator on a short so uh feel free to hook me up when you start animating *wink* *wink*

Hi Ash,
It's good to hear from you! I think your first step is to acquire a BA degree in animation. If you want to become a great animator, you will need to develop your skills. When you start to work, you will mainly collaborate with your teams. You will need effective communication skills, good time management skills, and a team spirit that can benefit you to work seamlessly with the animators and the digital artists. It seemed like your main focus is to create graphic designs for the video game character. This will be time-consuming, and it will take you even more weeks to create a short animated sequence. I would counsel you that you will need to be patient when you start to animate some good game characters. I hope I answered your questions. Have a good day!
