how to balance work and life?
Would it be possible for me to be a detective of some kind and still have an active family life?

It will be difficult to say what your work life will be like because it would depend on what type of investigator you become. Some of the work that investigators do surpass a nine to five schedule and sometimes they are called into court and have to spend extra time, again, depending on the type of work and cases and also on who you work for. It is not unusual to be working long hours, but that's not to say you can't have a personal life. Also, try not to base the entire profession on how it is portrayed on television or in the movies.
People that have work that goes beyond a shift type schedule always have a personal life. If you really love detective work, try not to let anything stop you from pursuing it because you should do work that you love. Every profession has their challenging aspects. The right person will accept your schedule and admire the work you do regardless of long hours. It is always worth doing what you love as that will keep you happy and foster a sense of fulfillment.
The bottom line is that your personal life is up to you. As a detective, you can always ask your manager for time off or for overtime, whatever you may need at the time. The work is so conditional that it's difficult to say how long the hours are for the various types of detective work. During your training and studies for this career, you will start to gain more awareness about a typical week as a detective. You'll be meeting a lot of people who can give you the correct insight from their perspective as well as a general overview. When you start to build a family, they will realize your career and it will not seem unusual to them. Others in your family just may have the same busy schedule you have and you can always find time to be together.

On most weekends and your a day-off day(s) on weekdays (if you have permission), you can do whatever you can do in your life. In your life, you can spend yout time with your friends; grab a brew at coffee shop, shopping (even windowshopping), talking each other in the park, and perhaps have a holiday in your free time.
At work, you can collaborate with colleagues for projects, prepare your presentation, organize all the documents you have written, you can do spend 30 minutes or less than 30 mins to grab a coffee and talk in the canteen.
Yet if we talk about socialize with people, I believe you can combine with either work and your life. As work hours starts in the morning generally, you can stick with your work and collaborate with your colleagues. As you can imagine, it is difficult to spend your time to have a break and it is difficult to socialize with either of them during the work. Yet you can have a free time to talk to your friends in life. Therefore, I would say that you can either socialize with friends and colleagues, or you can divide into 2 parts (talking with your friends in your free time, yet work hard at work). It is up to you. The second thing you can do is; wherever you go whether it is for project to visit somewhere for business or going holiday for vacation in your life, you may know the differents between them. If you request to combine with them, you can socialize with either colleagues and your friends once you introduce them to others. (It can be both life and work, it does not have to be work or life seperately). Yet if do not want to, you can go holiday with your friends rather than colleagues. On the one hand, you can grab a coffee at coffee shop with either your friends and colleagues; however you can spend couple of hours with friends more than your colleagues.
