Which college major do I choose?

I found interest in beauty school such as esthetician school for skin care and beauty. I want to work more in the lines of that. I still will be attending a 4 year college but can’t quite know what major to go for to help with esthetician schooling? Which ones do you suggest enrolling into?

Hello Stephanie,

It's fantastic to hear that you've got a clear vision for your future in the marketplace. Just like Michelle, I too would suggest diving into subjects like biology and chemistry. These fields are crucial because they shape how customers react to beauty products.

Another key area to focus on would be business courses. They'll equip you with the knowledge and skills to set up your own independent service. This could prove to be extremely beneficial for you.

Wishing you all the best on your journey.

Emma’s Answer

If you're interested in pursuing a career in esthetics and skincare while attending a 4-year college, consider majoring in fields such as biology or biochemistry to gain a scientific understanding of skincare, chemistry to delve into the chemistry of skincare products, nutrition or dietetics to learn about the impact of diet on skin health, business or marketing for entrepreneurial or managerial skills, psychology for a deeper understanding of client needs, communications or public relations for marketing skincare products, or a pre-health or pre-medical program if you aim to pursue advanced skincare treatments or dermatology. It's important to align your chosen major with your esthetician career goals and verify the specific requirements for esthetician programs and licensing in your area, while also consulting academic advisors for guidance. Ultimately, your passion for esthetics will be a driving force in your success.

Edmund Joseph (Ed)’s Answer

Enroll in as many business-related courses as possible, such as accounting, marketing, and management. A common reason why beauty or hair salons don't succeed is due to poor management. Acquire knowledge on how to handle your finances, set a budget that covers all your fundamental expenses like rent, utilities, and salaries. Marketing classes will equip you with the skills to effectively promote your business. Management courses will teach you how to oversee your team and run your business efficiently. Remember, in this industry, you are essentially your own business. It's fantastic that you're attending beauty school or esthetician school for skin care and beauty, as these skills are highly sought after.

Michelle’s Answer

Hi, Stephanie !

You have an interest in such a wonderful, fun and useful study. I would suggest taking lots of science classes like biology, anatomy, and chemistry. Although you may not think of this at first, I would suggest also taking a Theatrical Stage Makeup class in your college's theatre department. You will be surprised at how much you learn that will be brought over into use for everyday makeup. I speak of that from experience. That is the closest course I can come up with that is close to makeup that would possibly be offered in a college or university. I would also suggest taking some public speaking courses because as an Esthetician, you may be called upon to give presentations once you start working at a salon or spa. It may be interesting to also take a marketing and advertising course at the University.

Once you get to esthetician school, the study is more focused on what you'll need to know. You will study theory, practice and clinical study of the skin and you will learn specific spa services. The course of study is not very long, and depends on the requirement of your state as to how many hours you need to put in to complete the program. It is usually between four and six months. In Texas, it is 600 hours, but keep in mind, guidelines change sometimes. It is certainly worth it because it is a growing field and it is also a career for which, one day, you can open your own business.

I wish you all the best in your pursuit of a marvelous career and in school !

Without knowing you it's hard to give the best advice. I would certainly recommend college as a way of developing skills that would be helpful in this career or discovering other careers that you hadn't considered until a particular course inspired you. There are also surveys you can take, either from counselors or on sites like MyPlan.com, that can help solidify your path or suggest others. What impresses me the most about the question is your determination to go to college rather than bypassing it in favor of only going to beauty school. So many intellectual, cultural and social benefits can be derived from college. If you know that this is your calling, you've received some good advice here already in terms of science, health and business classes. Good luck.
Thank you comment icon Hey Alan, I wanted to give you a heads-up that its actually "myplan.com" and it doesn't include the s! The website link takes them to a domain page Gurpreet Lally, Admin
Thank you comment icon Thanks, Gurpreet. I had thought it was MyPlan, but I had inadvertently written MyPlans on my desktop link, which is unfortunately what I referred to. I even mis-corrected my first reference to the site on here accordingly. I've now gone back and fixed them all. Alan Weber
