Where do I start when building my portfolio for fashion design?
Most colleges I've looked into don't really provide anything specific. But I'd like to know the best way to ensure that my portfolio is going to be perfect!

Hi Sarah,
They are looking for your style, your trends and how you interpret the trends. It can be daunting since you are going to school to learn about fashion design lol I am sure you have designs and collections you have already created, now you present them in a way others can explain your design process. It can go like this:
Introduction: You are creating a mood with photographs. You can use photographs of what inspired you to create your designs.
Color: Be sure to show your color story (the colors you used in your designs)
Fabrication: If you have fabric swatches, you can neatly incorporate them.
Sketches: Your fashion illustrations, you can use different layouts to create an atmosphere. The illustrations are unique to you and you
Flats if requested: Basically your designs laid out flat. This allows them to see your ideas on construction, and how the clothes really look.
Be sure to showcase your personality. Even if its minimalist, Calvin Klein made it into a lifestyle. There is room for your style. They want to see your fashion talent, and help you to grow as a designer. Have fun with it, and remember you are going to learn more once accepted.

Hello, Sarah !
There are actually two types of portfolios for Fashion Designers, a personal portfolio and a Specific Portfolio. Let's just talk about the Personal Portfolios right now because the Specific Portfolio is one you use only when you are applying for a specific project.
The personal portfolio is one that contains your very best collections. It should contain styles that you specialize in. It should contain all styles that you have expertise in. I think showing an aptitude for various trends and fashion genres would be very impressive. Show how you design contemporary modern, Winter, Summer, Spring, Autumn fashions, Edgy, Preppy, Business Attire, Vintage, Sport, Glamour and create a couple of original genres if you are so inclined - the more variety the better, in my opinion. As a graphic volunteer stylist, I made up two genres : Athleisure and Contemporary Beat (a modification of Beatnik style) Athleisure is a sports clothes style that you would also wear to just hang out with friends casually.
Your portfolio should contain a brief introduction, mood boards of your own ideas, and pages of your designs. Your introduction should be about 7 or 8 lines and introduce what your inspiration is and what is found in your portfolio. Mood boards show your inspiration. You can make some wonderful ones on Trend Me dot net. Visit their website and see some wonderful outfits. You can probably join (it's free) and when you make your mood boards, just print them out and collect them for your portfolio. For your sketches, use high quality materials and learn how to use Illustrator and InDesign and put your sketch alongside of your computer generated version in the portfolio.
It's certainly a lot because much goes into making the ideal portfolio. If you have any more questions do not hesitate to ask specific questions about any details. I wish you all the best and I believe you will have fun creating your fabulous portfolio !

Hello,
You have the ability to kickstart your portfolio right away! Think of a portfolio as a vibrant, visual display of your skills - like a resume, but more dynamic. I know it might seem a bit daunting at first, but trust me, the process is straightforward.
In your portfolio, showcase the work that truly reflects your daring spirit and your mastery of diverse techniques. Make it compelling by narrating a captivating story, starting with a crisp introduction that leaves a lasting impression.
Help your viewers understand your creative vision by explaining and labeling your work clearly. Most importantly, let your portfolio be a mirror reflecting your unique personality and burning passion. These are your strongest assets in this journey.
Remember, you've got this! Good luck!
