Jacob’s Answer

I am not a Marine biologist but my older brother is and I know his answer to this very well.
It all stemmed from him volunteering at our city's aquarium. He was one of those people that share facts and information about all the animals at the aquarium (I know those jobs have a specific name but I forgot it). Learning about all those different animals fascinated him and from there his passion continued from there. He has also admitted to having Thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) but tells me and everyone that he likes being afraid and being in the place where he is scared.
Also our family is from the Philippines so maybe the love for the ocean was something that was always meant to happen for him.
As for me, I do enjoy observing fish and I love swimming but all of that learning about the sea and the animals is too much for my tiny brain to handle. I would be more likely to write about fish.
Not too related: but when I finally manned up and did snorkeling for the first time (I also have a bit of Thalassophobia), it was just so beautiful I wish I could do it again right now.

Gary’s Answer

A long time ago (1972) I was selected to take care of the fish tank in my high school biology classroom. Initially, I was interested oceanography based on marine biology books and tv shows. When I was getting ready for college I looked into oceanography. I was mostly microscopic biology and water chemistry. Not quite what I was good at. However, almost next door was the College of Fisheries. More macro biology. I worked in fish biology for over 37 years. I think that within biology there are more fish biology positions than other types. I worked in Alaska, Washington State, and California. My work included collecting data on fishing ships, processing that data, managing fisheries, operating hatcheries, developing and implementing habitat conservation measures, water management, supervision, management, budget management, and implementing of the Endangered Species Act.
