Hello, Saleyann !

I wouldn't say that any career is difficult to study for, rather that there are challenges and triumphs in every college experience. If one has the interest, curiosity and passion for a field of study leading to a career, it is well worth the experience. The good thing is that you are asking for information beforehand and probably reading a lot of course catalogs from colleges which is a good idea to do.

In order to be a mental health counselor, you must be certified/licensed and it does take a bit of time in school. First you would obtain a Bachelors degree in behavioral science, social science or psychology. Than you would go for a Masters in Mental Health Counseling. Than you will complete an internship so you can be licensed and than take the licensing exam and pass the licensing exam. Once you pass the licensure test, you than apply for the license. You also apply for and earn additional certifications.

This is a field of work in which the learning doesn't end once you start your career You will always be attending conferences, trainings and updating your awareness of new things and trends in this type of work.

As you see, there is a great deal of time you will be spending learning this career. You have to decide how long you want to go to school. It can be done if you really have a passion for this work and are driven to excel. It is good that you are exploring and I hope that this has answered your question. Best wishes in your school and career !

Hello, Saleyann, In addition to getting the best education you can in your Bachelor's and Master's program, I suggest considering pursuing a doctorate in Counseling. Sometimes a doctorate gives one more time to mature and also gives more confidence. It is not necessary to becoming a licensed counselor, however. I do think the best thing you can do to become a good therapist, is to go to therapy yourself and create an atmosphere of overall good health for yourself.
In creating overall good health, consider a good nutrition plan, a healthy excercise program, and an intuitive spiritual connection. Not only will this assist your ability to becoming a good therapist, it will help you become a healthier happier you! Of course, an overall good health program assists in any career one chooses. Good luck to you, Saleyann!
