My freshman college student's son is moving in next week - your College/Institution should have posted something about it in their "housing" website. Anyhow this is what my son's college recommended

Audrey’s Answer
I think Idillio's answer is helpful. Here are some things I either forgot about completely before I moved in or really appreciated having, and why:
- mattress pad. the mattresses they have are thin and having a little extra cushion was helpful
- a table fan. although each dorm had its own thermostat/unit, it wasn't always the most reliable!
- a table lap for when you don't want all the overhead lights on
- earplugs in case your neighbors are keeping you awake
- an extension chord. some dorms don't allow them, but a lot of them do as long as they have a surge protector
- a hamper, preferentially one that's light (easy to carry) or had wheels because you're going to need to carry it to the laundry room
- bed risers! this was a necessity for space-saving, because once the bed is risen a bit, you can put storage bins underneath
- common cold medications, stomach medications, pain medications, etc
- hangers for the closet
- I ended up utilizing a three-tier drawer unit (one of the small ones with rollers on the bottom). this depends on the amount of storage you have, but I put socks and things like that in there. it was helpful because it was private, easy to access, and fit in the tiny closet
- a small chorded vacuum was a LIFE SAVER. especially if you have an area rug, a broom won't do the trick. hair, dirt, crumbs, dust, etc collects very quickly in such a small space and it can get gross if you don't clean
- face/hand towels
- a shower caddy to keep your things together while you shower. also shower shoes if you are sharing a shower
- toilet paper. the kind they provide is usually the super thin 1-ply
I hope this was helpful!
