Jamie’s Answer

Marco,

I don't think any Leader is necessarily trained to deal with a mental health issues like suicidal-type situations unless they were clinically trained. Another example is a training accident whether it's injury to a Soldier and/or equipment. Regrettably, all of these things could happen in your unit just like they would in the civilian/corporate world. Ultimately it comes down to what kind of Leadership Team you have in your unit up and down the chain of command. What kind of environment has been created...is it toxic, hostile, reckless etc. These type events can be mitigated with good Leadership but again, it is still possible, but good Leader Team will have plans in place to support at the unit level all the way up to the Installation level as well as a network of other Leaders and peers to lean on for support.

One of the keys will be your ability to work under stress. From day 1 and going forward you will experience situation where you are under large amounts of stress. You need to develop your tools and use your resources and those around you to work through those situations. Being able to stay level headed and make sound decisions will get you through. You will have the guidance of your leadership group as well as your peers to work with to get through it while accomplishing your goal.
