Lauren’s Answer

You have probably already made your decision about this trip since you posted the question several months ago. As general feedback, it is always to your benefit to interact with the work field you hope to enter. First, it allows you to make informed decisions about your future education and career choices. Better to find out that it is not what you expected before you commit. Second, your participation in extracurricular volunteer programs shows schools and employers that you are dedicated and can offer practical experience. That said, select opportunities based on what interests or works best for you rather than what might make you a stronger candidate. If it truly interests you, it is worth your time.

Lauren recommends the following next steps:

Before committing to any program, check out it's background and take precautions to ensure your safety. When looking at overseas programs, these are some good resources: 1. US State Department: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/before-you-go/travelers-with-special-considerations/volunteering-abroad.html 2. Your guidance counselor or academic adviser 3. There are several volunteer organizations who review and vet programs, such as https://www.volunteerforever.com/ - use these to find programs or to get feedback on one you are considering
