What is the career path of a Gunsmith for an 18 year old?

How would you get into a career of gunsmithing right out of high school If the required age to get a FFL and GS Certification is 21?

Thank you comment icon Hi Austin, I won't be able to give a super-specific response as I don't know anything about gunsmithing, but is the military an option for you? When I was in the Army, each company had an armorer who was in charge of the secure room where we kept all the weapons and they did light repairs. I am sure there is a specialty that does more complicated repairs as well. Just a thought.. Tom Thomas Sawyer
Thank you comment icon It might be possible, as I am of sound mind and decently in shape. Although, I do have ASD and ADD, so I feel unless I get extremely lucky with a waiver, my chances are quite slim. Austin

Alex’s Answer

The best career path that I could suggest is look at a machinist school to learn how to run a lathe and a mill. These will teach you the necessary skills on making parts and how to make the threads for screws. The National Rifle Association has list of schools that teach gun smithing. The other way to learn is to find a local gunsmith and become an apprentice.
