My daughter is currently pursuing her dreams in medical school. During her senior year of HS, she had the fantastic opportunity to shadow a doctor, and she even earned high school credit for this enriching experience. However, the possibility of receiving credit for such an endeavor hinges on the presence of an internship program at your high school. To be clear, while my daughter didn't receive financial compensation for her time spent shadowing a doctor, the experience was invaluable. It not only added a significant achievement to her resume, but also provided her with a wealth of knowledge and insight.

Absolutely concur with the initial observation. During your high school years and even throughout your pre-med studies in college, it's crucial to immerse yourself in medical volunteering. This not only enriches your knowledge but also strengthens your medical school application. Additionally, consider summer internships, often research-based, as they can further boost your profile.
While I'm uncertain about their availability at the high school level, I can confirm that such internships are definitely accessible during college. In fact, I had the opportunity to participate in a research internship at Johns Hopkins during the summer break between my second and third college year. This invaluable experience not only augmented my learning but also distinguished me from many of my peers.
If you have access to any pre-med counselors, I strongly advise you to connect with them. However, in today's digital age, a wealth of information is readily available online. It might require a bit of time and effort to navigate and identify the most suitable opportunity for you, but it's definitely worth it. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

It's truly commendable that you're so career-driven in the tenth grade! If your aspirations lie in becoming a doctor or nurse, I highly recommend seeking out volunteer roles at your local hospital or nursing home. This will not only provide you with a firsthand glimpse into the workings of these environments, but also an excellent opportunity to converse with seasoned professionals. They would be more than willing to share their insights on the necessary steps to join the medical field. Don't forget to consult your school counselor, as they may be aware of potential volunteer opportunities in your vicinity.
Here's to your exciting journey into the world of medicine!
Best wishes,
Melisa

You can find volunteer and internship experiences in a wide variety of areas! Many hospitals have set volunteer programs so look at local hospital websites, also cancer centers usually take volunteers and nursing homes. Additionally children’s hospitals almost always are looking for volunteers. You can also shadow local doctors, go on a medical mission trip with different well establish medical organizations for humanitarian efforts, volunteer with places like Red Cross, American cancer society, planned parenthood just to name a few!
