As a high school student, is it important to have an internship prior to applying to college?

I'm a junior in high school and was curious to see if internships would be a useful way to get into good colleges (Specifically construction management). I'm interested in construction management due to my exposure to the career, my dad owns a construction company so I feel this is a career I can apply myself to. Some colleges I am interested in are Cal Poly, Virginia Tech, and UCLA. Are there any other colleges I should consider? #internships #construction #construction-management #college-admissions #college

Personally, I do not think that it is necessary to have an internship prior to college. From my experience, it is important to build strong study habits in high school to prepare for your four years of college. I would say it is necessary to have at least one internship that relates to your major, before you graduate from college. During your time in high school you should figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you are able to utilize them in college. I think that having an internship prior to college would look fantastic on a college application, but it is not necessary. College boards look for other attributes/characteristics as well. They look for leadership positions, clubs, and more. As long as you can work hard at your field, you will be fine in the future.

Ben’s Answer

At any time of your life, it is good to have experience. While I would not say that it is imperative that you have an internship before college, it does not hurt your chances of knowing what you want to do while in college. Most high school students do not have internships, and many of them end up just as successful as those that do. It is up to you to determine if it is something that you want to do or if you are ready for it. If the job seems right to you, take it.

Any time you have a opportunity to add experience to your resume it is helpful and beneficial. One for your own development and second those who would review your resume either for employment or for entry into a program see that as your drive and desire to achieve your goals
