What should be my minor subject?

Hi, i’m studying management, planning to major in international business or operation management, any suggestions for minor subjects? or any advice? i’m also planning to work in the beauty industry.

Hi!

If your university offers a data analytics or data science minor, I would definitely do that. It is a great complement to a business major and is a huge up-and-coming industry. It will give you a leg up with future internships and job opportunities.

Another option would be a language minor. It would diversify your skills and is overall a fun minor to have!

As a CPA, I'm biased and would recommend an accounting minor, since it's the language of business and you'll get a better idea of how the fashion business/industry works behind-the-scenes and the financial aspects of it. Best of luck!

It's great to hear that you are hoping to work in the beauty industry. What I know from being in e-commerce for quite some time is that the beauty industry is one of the few that continues to grow online every single year. Meaning digital is a focus for a lot of these companies.

With the digital trend being extremely important you could minor in computer science or some data-related field. All of these skills would be valuable as they would allow you collaborate with important parts of the business or even move into that sector if you develop the passion for them later on. Computer science would allow you to work with engineers as a part of the digital product management team. Having a background in data will make you better at any beauty company especially with a website since they have so much data on their customers.

If your goal is to one day own your own beauty company or work at a smaller company it would be most helpful from my experience to get some skills that are broad outside of your major in international business or operations. This is because you have to do a lot of different things to do the fact that you would be at a smaller company. Marketing is great as so much of the beauty industry is dependent on marketing so understanding how to work collaboratively with your colleagues in that area and speak that marketing language is extremely valuable. The same could be said for a degree in finance as you would have to most likely collaborate with colleagues in Finance.

I also studied Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and I ended up being able to pivot into digital product management and then e-commerce, which allowed me to work across a number of DTC brands. There are so many paths to getting into the beauty industry, you got this!

I think a college minor should be a balance of enhancing your skillset and ultimate ability to get hired while also finding something enjoyable. For example, perhaps you really like to travel; studying another language for your minor will enhance your traveling experiences while also making you an attractive candidate for an international company with multiple global offices.
